History & Character

A Town Built Along the River

Mays Landing's character comes from its waterfront past. The Great Egg Harbor River shaped the town, from its earliest trading post to the shipbuilding era and its role as the county seat.

Named for Captain George May

In 1740, Captain George May, an agent and surveyor for the West Jersey Society, sailed up the Great Egg Harbor River and later established a trading post and shipyard along Babcock Creek. His popular ship-loading site became known as May’s Landing, and the name stayed.

A waterfront shipbuilding town

Mays Landing grew into a busy shipbuilding center along the Great Egg Harbor River. Local builders launched sailing vessels there using regional pine timber and iron from the Weymouth foundries, shaping the town’s character for generations.

County seat since 1837

When Atlantic County was created in February 1837, Mays Landing became its county seat, and the county courthouse followed in 1838. The historic district along Main Street and the waterfront still reflects that long civic history.

The Lake

Lake Lenape: Mays Landing's Waterfront Heart

Lake Lenape is a man-made lake in the center of Mays Landing, formed in the 1840s when a dam was built across the Great Egg Harbor River, flooding roughly 300 acres of land. The river widens into the lake at Mays Landing, and the waterway is part of the Great Egg Harbor National Scenic and Recreational River.

Lake Lenape Park East and West together cover nearly 2,000 acres and are the area's main outdoor destination. Both parks are free to enter and offer a long list of activities.

As-Is Pricing Means Renovation Opportunity

Dated homes in the area are often sold as-is and priced to reflect their condition. That keeps the entry price low and lets buyers make their own design and improvement choices rather than paying a premium for someone else's renovations.

Factor in the HOA Fee

Monthly association fees are part of the true cost of condo ownership, and lenders count them in your debt-to-income ratio. In Harding Run II the fee is approximately $625 per month and covers community amenities including the clubhouse and tennis courts.
